What You Need to Know Today

In this episode of the Micromobility Podcast, Damian Young, Founder and CEO of Zeus Scooters, joins the show to discuss the company’s journey from launching in smaller European cities to acquiring the assets of Superpedestrian.
Zeus took a different path from many micromobility operators. Instead of chasing mega-cities and raising massive venture rounds, the company focused on smaller markets, built its own three-wheel scooter design, and maintained strict financial discipline.
Now, with the acquisition of Superpedestrian’s assets, Zeus is entering a new phase of scale.

Germany Sells 3.8M Bikes & E-Bikes in 2025

Total bicycle sales in Germany remained relatively stable in 2025, with 3.8m units sold, a 3.9% decline YoY. E-bikes continued to dominate the market with a 52.7% share, with around 2m units sold during the year.
There are now over 17m e-bikes on German roads, significantly more than the roughly 2m electric cars in the country. Meanwhile, workshop services grew 13%, highlighting the growing importance of service and maintenance in the bicycle industry.
London’s E-Scooter Trial Moves Into Phase 3

London’s rental e-scooter trial, launched in 2021 by Transport for London, is preparing to enter Phase 3, with a new tender process expected to start operations by September 2026. The trial currently spans 11 boroughs across about 300 km² and includes 1.6k+ parking bays, operated by Lime and Voi. Usage has grown significantly, with trips rising 54% from 1.3m to over 2m between September 2024 and September 2025, while 95% of rides end in designated parking bays and serious injuries remain extremely rare. Phase 3 will continue the trial under a new procurement process, helping shape future regulation for e-scooters in London.
Error Correction
Micromobility Newsletter published on March 9 included a chart on "E-Bike Sales in Major European Markets & US – 2024" with incorrect figures, which has since been removed. The original chart incorrectly reflected total bicycle sales rather than e-bike sales only for several markets. The chart below reflects updated data. Please also note that U.S. figures are industry estimates, as official nationwide sales data is not publicly available.

The Parking Problem Was Never Just About Riders

Parking issues with shared micromobility are often blamed on riders, but research suggests the real problem is lack of clear rules and parking infrastructure. After bans in Paris, Madrid, and Prague, studies showed most riders try to park responsibly but are unsure of local regulations. Cities like Stockholm, Berlin, Brussels, and London have instead focused on adding parking zones, reducing fleets, or repurposing car parking spaces. The lesson is that parking problems are largely an infrastructure issue, not just a rider behavior issue.
Solid-state batteries: The future of e-bikes?

Solid-state batteries could be a future upgrade for e-bikes by replacing the liquid electrolyte used in current lithium-ion batteries with a solid material. This change could make batteries safer, more stable in extreme temperatures, lighter, and capable of higher energy density, potentially increasing range and lifespan. However, the technology is still expensive and not ready for mass production, especially in the cost-sensitive e-bike market. For now, solid-state batteries are more likely to appear first in premium electric vehicles and motorcycles, with e-bikes adopting them later as production scales and costs fall.
