Evolve Grows North Shore Network

BCAA's Evolve E-Bike Share expands to eastern North Shore areas, including Deep Cove

The shared e-bike operator Evolve, run by BCAA, has extended its service area to include Deep Cove on Vancouver’s North Shore. Several new parking stations have been added to enable easy pick-up and drop-off, improving last-mile mobility for residents and visitors. Evolve E‑Bike Share began operating on the North Shore in July 2025. In mid-2025, Lime’s permit expired, and it formally exited the North Shore e-bike programme as of June 30, paving the way for Evolve to take over.

China Tightens E-Bike Battery Safety

China has tightened battery safety rules for e-bikes from December 1, 2025, making the new GB 17761-2024 standard and China Compulsory Certification (CCC) mandatory for all new sales. The updated regulations introduce stricter battery and charger testing, including thermal-runaway protection, battery-charger communication, and tighter limits on fire-prone materials. Older, non-certified models can no longer be sold, though already registered e-bikes may continue in use. The move is aimed at sharply reducing battery fires and improving nationwide e-bike safety.

Salford E-Scooter Trial Nears End

Lime’s shared e-scooter trial in Salford, UK, running since 2021, has entered its final six months as of December 4, 2025. Local authorities, together with the Department for Transport (DfT) and Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), will soon decide whether to extend, scale back, or make the scheme permanent when the trial concludes in May 2026.

Want People to Bike? Easy, Just Build More Bike Lanes

Building more protected bike lanes directly drives higher cycling rates, according to recent analysis. In London, the bike network expanded from 90 km in 2016 to over 431 km in 2025, yet dedicated lanes, just 2.5% of roads, now carry about one-third of all cycling traffic. Surveys show 76% of riders feel safe on protected lanes, compared with only 40% on regular roads, reinforcing the strong link between safe infrastructure and ridership growth.

Austin Proposes E-Scooter Program Overhaul

Austin has proposed opening its e-scooter program to new vendors while keeping a two-operator cap. The city currently works with Lime and Bird. The proposal would shift the system from a permit-based model to a contract-based structure, aimed at streamlining oversight and attracting investment. Despite the transition, the number of available scooters fell by more than 2k between 2024 and 2025, even as total trips rose by 6% year over year.
