What You Need to Know Today

Scaling Profitably: Late Stage Capital Strategies for Operators

In this Micromobility Europe 2025 panel, Prabin Joel Jones moderates a candid discussion with Paul Adrien Cormerais (Pony), Thijn van Helvoirt (No Such Ventures), and Pierre Leydier (Smart Lenders Asset Management) on how micromobility operators can scale profitably in a tight capital market.

The conversation dives into what actually unlocks late-stage funding today, from asset-backed financing and blended debt-equity structures to fundraising timelines, investor expectations, and why validated unit economics now matter more than aggressive expansion plans.

Segway Unveils New E-Bikes and Electric Dirt Bike

Segway has expanded its electric mobility lineup at CES 2026 in Las Vegas, introducing two new e-bikes, Myon and Muxi, alongside an all-new electric dirt bike, the Xaber 300. The new e-bikes target a broader consumer segment and feature Segway’s Intelligent Ride System, including anti-theft tools, OTA updates, adaptive assist, and connected displays, with pricing starting at $1,699.

Segway also showcased the Xaber 300, a high-performance electric dirt bike inspired by Dakar Rally technology, offering multiple power modes, advanced traction control, and app-based rider settings.

Shared Micromobility M&A Shifts to Consolidation

Mergers and acquisitions in shared micromobility accelerated in 2025 as the sector moved decisively from expansion to consolidation. Since 2017, around a third of all deals have involved shared operators, highlighting the difficulty of building sustainable businesses in an asset-heavy market.

After cash-fueled growth and billion-dollar acquisitions in 2017-2019, tighter funding and weaker unit economics forced sub-scale operators to exit or merge from 2020 onward. Recent deals, including large operator mergers in Europe and Asia-Pacific, reflect a new phase focused on survival, scale, and long-term city contracts. By 2026, consolidation is no longer reactive but the primary way the shared micromobility industry grows.

  • The UK government has published its first Road Safety Strategy in over a decade.
  • Walden, New York, US, has banned e-bikes and e-scooters from sidewalks.
  • Glendale, Arizona, US has introduced new safety rules for e-bikes and e-scooters.
  • Metro Manila, Philippines, began enforcing a ban on e-bikes and e-trikes on major roads on January 2, 2026.
  • Police in Dorset, UK, seized a record number of illegal e-bikes and e-scooters this year.
  • Ashland, Missouri, US officials are split over a proposed e-bike ban or restrictions.
  • Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, has opened the Sydney Harbour Bridge cycleway ramp.
  • Midland, Texas, US police will roll out electric bikes to boost patrol mobility and crime deterrence.
  • Police in Merton, London, UK, seized nearly 40 illegal e-bikes and scooters in a crackdown.

Toloka.vc Backs PLUTO E-Bike Rental with £186k Investment

Ukrainian venture syndicate Toloka.vc has invested £186k in GIN e-bikes, which operates the PLUTO electric bike subscription service in London. The deal is structured as a 2 year loan at 12% interest, secured against the company’s assets, including its e-bike fleet.

The funding will be used to purchase 160 new bikes and scale PLUTO’s subscription model for couriers and urban riders. The company aims to reach 100 active customers within six months, targeting around £200k in annual revenue, with plans to raise up to £1m in 2026 to expand the fleet to 1k e-bikes across London.

Parañaque Bans E-Bikes and E-Trikes on Major Roads

In Philippines, the city government of Parañaque has banned e-bikes, e-tricycles, and other light electric vehicles from seven major roads to improve traffic safety. The ban aligns with national traffic laws, with violators facing fines and possible vehicle impoundment. LEVs remain permitted on secondary and city-controlled roads, while lighter devices such as pedal-assist e-bikes and e-scooters under 50 kg may use designated bicycle lanes.

  • A 2025 study explores shared e-bike demand and its role as a sustainable alternative for short urban trips. The authors report that shared e-bike systems, when integrated with existing transport networks and supported by infrastructure, can increase mode share and reduce emissions, especially for short-distance trips in dense urban areas.

  • This study, published in November 2025, examines policy strategies behind widely used bike share systems in the large city of Helsinki and the smaller city of Tartu. Using interviews and mobility data, it finds that strong integration with public transport and comprehensive city-wide coverage were key to high ridership. Both cities show that treating bike sharing as part of the public transport network, backed by systematic planning, fuels success regardless of city size.

  • A 2025 systematic review finds that sustainable micromobility solutions are increasingly integrated into wider transport and logistics systems. Synthesizing literature on micromobility planning, policy, sharing systems, and urban freight, the authors highlight the potential of micromobility to improve transport integration, support last-mile logistics, and promote sustainability, while identifying gaps in regulations and standardised performance measures.

  • A 2025 Dublin & international study finds that the quality and availability of infrastructure around public transport stops strongly shape micromobility integration. Using GIS analysis and catchment area network assessment, the authors develop an index to systematically evaluate how well micromobility (e-bikes, e-scooters, bicycles) connects with transit, finding that better infrastructure around stops increases the potential for combined use and supports more sustainable, multimodal travel.

Beijing Tightens E-Bike Rules

Beijing’s new Non-Motor Vehicle Regulations, effective May 1, 2026, mandate helmet use for all e-bike riders and passengers and tighten road-use rules. E-bikes must be registered, with licence plates valid for 10 years, after which renewal or re-registration is required. The rules ban scooters and self-balancing devices from roads and set the speed limit at 15 km/h in non-motor lanes. Authorities will also cap shared e-bike fleets, with around 15k shared electric bikes currently operating in pilot areas.

Verge TS Pro Debuts as First Production E-Motorcycle

Verge Motorcycles, a Finnish electric motorcycle manufacturer, has introduced the TS Pro, the world’s first production electric motorcycle powered by a solid-state battery. The supernaked e-bike supports CCS2 fast charging up to 200 kW, enabling a claimed 80% recharge in just 10 minutes, a major step forward for electric motorcycle adoption. The TS Pro features Verge’s hubless rear-wheel motor delivering 102 kW (138 hp) and an eye-catching 1k Nm of torque, accelerating from 0–100 km/h in 3.5 seconds. Buyers can choose between 20.2 kWh and 33.3 kWh battery packs, offering up to 600 km of claimed range.
